Born for War

New Zealand's Military History - A Family Perspective

This short film by Tearepa Kahi, depicts a taua (war-party) hauling a traditional Maori waka (canoe) overland towards another body of water (river, sea, or lake). They have captured a prisoner and are attempting to flee enemy territory and return home. *This is how a Nga Puhi taua, under the command of Hongi Hika and other senior chiefs (including Moka Te Kainga-mataa) undertook a major raid upon the people of Te Arawa in the Rotorua area in 1823.
